The gauge gives you a reading while you're actively pumping. Once you stop pumping the valve's sealing surface closes and the gauge is no longer in contact with the chamber's pressure.

A friend has the pump and it worked a whole lot better than mine. BTW, missed the Labor Day Sale. should have purchase it yesterday when I first looked at it
