Product Details

An alternative to waist-belted PFDs, the low-profile NRS Matik Inflatable PFD resembles a traditional lifevest with the compact convenience of an inflatable.
  • This lightweight self-inflating PFD provides 22.5 lbs. of flotation and only meets U.S. Coast Guard requirements as a Type III life jacket when worn. (See Note below.)
  • The Matik folds compactly into a low-profile horse-collar style jacket to give you on-demand flotation that doesn't get in your way stand-up paddling, fishing or wading.
  • When deflated, the vest secures with a waist buckle and offers one adjustment point for a snug fit.
  • The Matik does not inflate automatically; in the event of a swim, pull the red tab to engage the pressurized CO2, inflating the integrated bladder.
  • Features a zippered pocket with internal tether for keys or a whistle plus a manual backup cord, mouth inflation valve, reflective accents and two attachment points.
  • Includes a 24 gram CO2 cartridge. Replacement CO2 Re-Arming Kits (Item #40100.01) are sold separately.
  • CO2 cartridges are one-time-use only. It's good practice to keep an extra CO2 cartridge on hand to re-arm the PFD after each inflation.
Note: An inflatable PFD is certified by the US Coast Guard as a Type V PFD. However, it meets Coast Guard requirements for Type III PFDs when it is worn. In other words, you must be wearing the deflated collar for it to qualify as a required flotation device.

The Green Arming Pin breaks when you pull the inflation cord to inflate the Matik. The intact Arming Pin serves as a visual sign that there's a full CO2 cylinder available when needed. If you would like additional Arming Pins, order Item # 99208.01.

Excellent
I use it for kayak fishing. I don't even notice that I have it on, it's that comfortable

Generally like it
I like the inflatable PFD -- so much lighter and more comfortable than a regular kayak PFD that I am actually wearing it rather than just putting it in the Kayak. My only complaint is about the fit. I am short -- 5 feet -- PFD hikes up on my shoulders and will not stay down on my waist. Another buckle higher up might have helped.

Great for long distance kayaking
I love my Otto Matik. Very lightweight and cool on hot summer days! I carry an extra cartridge in my waterproof bag, and have tested the vest several times. No problems with constant sun, heat or aging.

Great for overwater use in small aircraft
We use these vests primarily for over-water travel in small Cessna airplanes that I fly in the San Juans. Compared with similar vests by other companies, these are fairly inexpensive. Do note they are *not* designed for rough water /seas, something to consider. We are also planning on using them for flat-water boating. We did a practice deployment; they are not "explosive" but inflate completely with the C02 cartridge, and support the head out of the water in a simulated exercise. I would not recommend trying to swim any distance with them inflated as they are somewhat awkward, so if you are going to attempt to swim to shore do that before deploying them. The manual tube makes manual inflation/deflation a breeze, and they are very comfortable to wear on 2+ hour long flights.

Why did you choose this?

A phone conversation with one of your associates this afternoon steered me to this low profile PFD.

Small and out of the way. Great for fishing.

NRS sells good stuff.

As a gift for my son-in-law who fishes by himself during winter months.
