22lb flotation PFD from riding up when (not if) I'm in the water.
I'll report if these straps don't work, unless I drown as a result.
thanks
Questions
These are designed for use with life jackets like the NRS Big Water Guide, Big Water V Adult and Youth and Rapid Rescuer. These jackets have three webbing loops sewn in the bottom of the jackets - one in the middle of the back panel and one at the bottom of each front panel. You thread each strap through the back loop and then one through each front loop. If you have a jacket without such loops these straps probably won't work for you.
I have them on two PFDs used in a lake. I do not attach them to the PFD. On the straps non-buckle ends you will find small loops. I put these loops onto a small split steel key ring making them one piece. Then I thread them though the PFDs side straps. If a bit too long I tie a knot in one strap to shorten it. With care in adjusting these straps you may allow the PFD to be a little bit loose for comfort but the PFD does not float up into your face if you get into the water. If you paddle in places with debris such as tree branches in moving water using these straps might be dangerous.
William, you're correct, the Leg Straps won't work with a sprayskirt. They are great in other activities like a raft, sit-on-top kayak, canoe, or SUP board.
So, that means they pass through the crotch TWICE on each side? Seems like it would have been simpler and more comfortable to use a single loop that anchors at each end, instead of a continuous loop that passes through the crotch twice?
Intended usage: Big water v youth. Thanks
Yes, Mike, they are continuous loops that connect the lower back and front panel on either side. You can use one strap or both.
There are no webbing loops at the bottom of the panels, such as on the Big Water Guide Life Jacket. The only way they would work is looping them over the bottom side adjustment straps. Please note that sewing webbing loops onto the jacket is a modification that will void the US Coast Guard Approval.
Frank, some of our life jackets (Big Water Guide, Big Water Vs and Rapid Rescurer) have webbing loops sewn into the bottom of the jacket for attaching the Leg Straps. The Chinook does not have those loops. The only way to use the Straps would be to loop them over the bottom adjustment strap webbing. Doable, but not as convenient.
I recall having the same kind of problem. I ended up using one strap in front and one in back and crisscrossing them in the crotch. I only used them a couple times because I didn't care for them.
I'm not sure, since I can't really picture how you want to use them. I used mine to basically create a crotch strap for a life jacket for a youth who was too big for life jackets with built in crotch straps, but so little I was afraid he'd slip out of a life jacket without having them. They are very flexible in terms of use.
Jerry, only our Big Water V (adult and youth), Big Water Guide and Rapid Rescuer have webbing loops at the bottom of the flotation panels for attaching the Leg Straps. However, you can loop the straps over the jacket's lower adjustment straps.
As mentioned in the product text NRS Big Water V Adult and Youth, NRS Big Water Guide and NRS Rapid Rescuer Life Jackets have webbing loops sewn into the bottom of the foam panels for attaching the leg straps. The only other way to attach them is to loop them over bottom adjustment straps. Try Googling "life jacket pfd with leg straps" for other sources. Be aware that jackets approved for water skiing and jet skiing tend to be bright colored for safety reasons. Please give us a call with questions, 800.635.5202.
